"If the diet is not good, there will be no response to the medication — and there will be side effects from the treatment. You will not find this in the medical textbooks, but it has been the culprit of frustration for multiple patients and myself throughout the length of my career."

The Making of a Physician

Growing up in the tropics at the close of the 20th century was a blessing. Children played outside freely, video games were still a novelty, and hand sanitizer was not yet part of daily life — Dr. Rivera didn't encounter it until his third year of medical school. Without streaming and social media competing for his attention, he spent his free time reading about science, liberal arts, and literature, cultivating a deep and abiding passion for medicine.

That passion led him to Ponce School of Medicine, driven by a singular goal: to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. After medical school and internship, he specialized in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York, where he rose to Chief Resident and immersed himself in the complexities of chronic pain management. It was there that a sobering realization took hold — conventional medicine was treating symptoms, not their underlying causes.

Confronting the Opioid Crisis

Board-certified in disciplines that, at the time, unknowingly contributed to the opioid crisis, Dr. Rivera watched lives unravel under the weight of addiction. He persisted — and pivoted — completing a Spine and Musculoskeletal Pain Fellowship at the University of Florida under the mentorship of Drs. James Atchison and Artur Kalman.

A Pioneer in Alternative Medicine

Following his fellowship, Dr. Rivera lectured fellow physicians on pain management and became an early, outspoken advocate for alternative treatments — including dietary modification and medical marijuana — even in the face of skepticism from the broader medical community. His clinical exposure to patients suffering from fibromyalgia, failed back syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis deepened his conviction that conventional treatments were not enough. Influenced by Dr. Loren Cordain's foundational work in nutritional science, he began incorporating dietary therapy as a cornerstone of treatment.

His influence grew: he was invited by a state medical school to develop lectures on medical marijuana and pain management, ultimately contributing to more than 24 hours of ACCME-accredited Continuing Medical Education. He co-founded Cannaworks Puerto Rico, and was introduced to the world of peptides and advanced hormone therapy through presentations by Drs. William Seeds and Thierry Hertoghe at the American Academy of Antiaging Medicine — encounters that fundamentally reshaped his clinical philosophy.

The Pivot to Root-Cause Medicine

Eventually, Dr. Rivera made the difficult decision to close his chronic pain clinic in Winter Park, Florida, and redirect his practice entirely toward root-cause medicine: hormone balancing and replacement therapy, peptides, lifestyle optimization, food sensitivity management, and personalized nutrition.

GENEFLAMMATION — His Life's Work

Today, Dr. Rivera brings over 25 years of hard-won clinical wisdom to every patient encounter — and to the GENEFLAMMATION platform he created. His life's work is the bridge between genomic science and the individual human body: precise, evidence-informed, and deeply personal. What he has learned has improved the lives of thousands. It is his hope that it will improve yours.
